There are two primary contenders for the highest speed ever reached by an aircraft carrying a single jet engine. The first is the American F-106 Delta Dart air defense fighter. In late 1959, the manufacturer Convair joined the US Air Force in taking one F-106 and modifying it to maximize the plane's record-setting potential. The goal of this effort, called Project Firewall, was to break the world absolute speed record of 1491.26 mph (2,399.95 km/h) that had been set by a Soviet Ye-152-1 on 7 October 1959. The Ye-152-1 was a special test version of the MiG-21 fighter that had also been customized to set speed, altitude, and climb records. The improved F-106 completed a number of test flights in early December 1959 with Air Force test pilot Major Joseph Rogers at the controls. During two weeks of testing, Rogers pushed the F-106 to its limits to prove out the modified design. Unfortunately, each flight was marred by engine compressor stalls that resulted in violent yaw oscillations. Although engineers and mechanics attempted to adjust the engine and eliminate the undesired behaviour, no successful correction could be found. The test team was forced to remove the modified F-106 from the program and instead use a standard production vehicle for the remainder of the test effort. The back-up plane was serial number 56-467 and made its attempt at the world speed record on 15 December 1959. Joseph Rogers. There are two primary contenders for the highest speed ever reached by an aircraft carrying a single jet engine. The first is the American F-106 Delta Dart air defense fighter. In late 1959, the manufacturer Convair joined the US Air Force in taking one F-106, 56-459 and modifying it to maximize the plane's record-setting potential. The goal of this effort, called Project Firewall, was to break the world absolute speed record of 1491.26 mph (2,399.95 km/h) that had been set by a Soviet Ye-152-1 on 7 October 1959. The Ye-152-1 was a special test version of the MiG-21 fighter that had also been customized to set speed, altitude, and climb records. The improved F-106 completed a number of test flights in early December 1959 with Air Force test pilot Major Joseph Rogers at the controls. During two weeks of testing, Rogers pushed the F-106 to its limits to prove out the modified design. Unfortunately, each flight was marred by engine compressor stalls that resulted in violent yaw oscillations. Although engineers and mechanics attempted to adjust the engine and eliminate the undesired behaviour, no successful correction could be found. The test team was forced to remove the modified F-106 from the program and instead use a standard production vehicle for the remainder of the test effort. The back-up plane was serial number 56-467 and made its attempt at the world speed record on 15 December 1959. During his very first flight in the new F-106, Major Rogers successfully broke the record previously set by the Ye-152-1 and claimed a new speed of 1,525.95 mph (2455.78 km/h) at an altitude of 40,000 ft (12,190 m). That speed at that altitude equates to about Mach 2.31. The record was set over an officially recognized straight line course 11 miles (18 km) in length, and Rogers reported that his s speed might have been even higher since the plane was still accelerating as it left the course. For his exploits, Rogers received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the De la Vaulx Medal, and became the 25th recipient of the Thompson Trophy. The right tire blew (all the rubber came off) just as the aircraft broke ground on takeoff. The decision was made to burn down fuel and go into Edwards because it had a longer runway and much better crash equipment than George. After burning down fuel, the aircraft started its descent into Edwards and, in the process, discovered that it also had speed brake failure. The pilot set up a straight in approach, touched down on the left gear (good tire and wheel) and held the right (the wheel without the tire) off as long as he could and still have enough speed to put it down gently. The pilot pulled the emergency drag chute and it also failed. Fortunately he still had good nose wheel steering and some elevon control, which allowed him to keep it going straight. The foam on the runway was totally ineffective in preventing the wheel break-up and subsequent fire. It was however successful in making it very difficult to keep the pointed end of the aircraft headed the right direction. At the moment he gently let the right wheel down, Edwards’s tower started giving the pilot a running account of what was going on behind him. In a very calm voice it went something like this: "You have sparks coming from your right wheel". "Your right wheel is breaking up". "Your right wing is on fire". "The whole back of the aircraft is on fire, get out"! Unfortunately he was still doing about 75 knots when he got that last transmission and did not have the 0-0 ejection seat. Raising the canopy at this time was no help in slowing this mobile barbeque pit down. He shut the engine and fuel off hoping it would prevent an explosion. It wasn't until the aircraft had slowed considerably that it slowly drifted off the left side of the runway. With over 100 aircraft destroyed on the flight line at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, some of them still burning, it was the last flyable C-130 remaining. In a very panicked state, hundreds of people were rushing to get aboard, as the aircraft represented a final ticket to freedom. People hurriedly crowded into the Hercules, packing in tighter and tighter. Eventually, the loadmaster informed the pilot, Major Phuong, a South Vietnamese instructor pilot, that he could not get the rear ramp closed due to the number of people standing on it. In a moment of inspiration, Major Phuong slowly taxied forward, then hit the brakes. The loadmaster called forward again stating he had successfully got the doors closed. In all, 452 people were on board, including a staggering 32 in the cockpit alone. Using a conservative estimate of 100 pounds per person, it translated into an overload of at least 10,000 pounds. Consequently, the Hercules used every bit of the runway and overrun before it was able to get airborne. Later returned to USAF. The mission was to bomb the Van Dien supply area. At the Initial Point, several SA-2 missiles were fired at the planes. This plane dropped its bombs over the target, the pilot turned steeply when it was hit by a missile on the left wing, knocking out all four engines. Without engine power on the left wing and with 250 miles to reach friendly territory, the pilot struggled to make a course heading back to Thailand. As the plane slowed, it was put into a dive and then climbed until speed decayed. This roller-coaster ride continued until the bomber crossed over the Mekong River after which the crew bailed out. All six crewmembers ejected safely and were rescued. 600 (MSN 17283) Active in April 1981 with 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell AFB, Texas on Busy Brewer deployment to RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire. This plane may also be the second B-52 claimed as a MiG-21 air-to-air victory, and may correspond to Vu Xuan Thieu firing 1 K-13 (AA-2 Atoll) AAM from MiG-21 of the 921th Sao Sao Fighter Regiment "Red Star", based at Cam Thuy. The MiG-21 was also destroyed by the resulting explosion. Some sources claim that Vu Xuan Thieu deliberately rammed the B-52. Parts of this plane are on display in Lenin Park, Hanoi and Ngoc Ha, near Hanoi. 606 (MSN 17289) Active in June 1981 with 22nd Bomb Wing at March AFB, California. All crew evacuated the aircraft successfully. 608 (MSN 17291) (99th BW) shot down by SA-2 SAM Dec 18, 1972 during Linebacker II. 2 of of crew KIA, remaining 4 bailed out and became POW. The aircraft landed in a lake in the Ba DInh district, now named "B-52 Lake". Bits of wrekage form a war memorial lake there, and still more pieces are displayed in a museum. 609 (MSN 17292) to MASDC from 96th BW, Dyess AFB, TX as BC267 11/27/78. Scrapped 610 (MSN 17293) crashed Feb 11, 1958 short of runway at Ellsworth AFB due to total power loss during final approach. Two of the eight on board killed, plus 3 ground personnel. The cause of the crash was determined to be from condensed water in the fuel lines that froze and clogged fuel filters (it was previously unknown that jet fuel absorbs water vapor from the atmosphere). The investigation concluded that there was an Liquid O2 leak that came into contact with hydraulic fluid in the vicinity of the EWO position. There was a gaping hole in the side of the fuselage close to six feet high.
