Since there is a lot of confusion out there about fighter aircraft designation schemes, here is a brief description of how American fighter/pursuit aircraft have been designated in the past. The confusion has come about because for a long time the Navy and USAAC/USAAF/USAF had completely different aircraft designation systems.
